OVERVIEW
ISO 50001 enables organizations to implement the Management systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance which includes energy efficiency, energy use and energy consumption. ISO 50001 certification helps organization to take a systematic approach for improvement of energy performance.
ISO 50001 specifies requirements of an energy management system (EnMS) for an organization to
- Develop an energy policy,
- Carry out energy review after studying past and present energy consumption data,
- Identify significance energy use,
- Establish design and procurement practices for equipment, system, processes and personnel working for Significant energy use,
- Establish objectives, targets, and Energy Management action plans,
- Identify legal and other requirement related to Significance Energy use.
ISO 50001 does not render specific performance criteria with respect to energy intensity. ISO 50001 can be used independently and also allows integration with other management system.
ISO 50001 certification is applicable to any organization that wishes to continually improve their energy performance.
ISO 50001 implementation leads to energy saving and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. ISO 50001 certification is applicable for all types and sizes of organizations irrespective of geographical, cultural or social conditions. ISO 50001 certification is applicable irrespective of the types of energy used.
Application of this International Standard can be tailored to fit the requirements of an organization - ISO 50001 can be implemented in any organisation as of whole or part of it after defining scope and boundary of implementation.
ISO 50001 was prepared by Technical Committee Energy Management - ISO/TC 242.
